Champion Golden Ale of Britain

Cumbrian Legendary Ales has won a top award for its famous Loweswater Gold beer. The beer has been judged Champion Golden Ale of Britain.

Competing at Earls Court, London, the outstanding beer brewed in the Lakes at Esthwaite was judged by a panel to be the top Golden Ale. The event was organised by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and involved a rigorous selection process through local, regional and finally national stages. Expert judges selected Loweswater Gold in a careful blind tasting. Interest in real ale has blossomed in recent years and there are now around 800 breweries in the UK.

Speaking after the announcement brewery owner Roger Humphreys said,

“This is one of the most prestigious beer competitions in the world. We are thrilled for the whole team who have worked so hard and the award is a tribute to them all, including Hayley Barton the Head Brewer. Special mention should also be made of Matt Webster, the original brewer when the beer was first developed in Loweswater.”

Hawkshead villagers 'disappointed' at Post Office closure today

VILLAGERS in Hawkshead have been left shocked after finding out that their Post Office is to close.

Villagers said that the ‘rural life-line’ will shut today (Wednesday), which has been deemed a big blow for both businesses and residents in the village.

One resident called the closure 'disappointing'.

The closure comes on the day which Royal Mail agreed a ten-year deal to keep using post offices.

The deal is expected to give certainty to sub-postmasters across the South Lakes since it is believed that income from Royal Mail business services currently accounts for around a third of sub-postmasters’ income.

The National Federation of Sub-Postmasters said the deal was ‘essential for the future wellbeing of our post offices’.

MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale Tim Farron said the new deal was ‘great news’.

He added: “I will keep doing everything I possibly can to defend and extend Post Office services in the South Lakes.”

He said that the closure of Hawkshead was a 'tragedy'.

He said: "I will go away today and speak to Post Office Ltd to bring back transitional measures for the short term to serve the village but I will also work to bring a full service back to the village."

Newspapers will be available from the Tourist Information Centre.
